Michael Wolf from Evansville, Indiana, was named the fourth winner of the Harvey Penick Trophy for Excellence in Golf Teaching during the closing banquet and awards ceremony at the 21st annual United States Golf Teachers Cup in Scottsdale, Arizona, on October 11.

Wolf’s first mentor was the legendary teacher Chuck Cook, a direct Harvey Penick disciple, at Evansville Country Club. Wolf remarked, “I knew, from that moment, what I wanted to do professionally. I wanted to help people the way Mr. Cook helped me. The daily reward I get from helping people is a lifetime gift.”

Wolf’s teaching and coaching accomplishments are a testament to his remarkable abilities. Among them:

  • Weekly average of over 45 individual lessons
  • Twenty-six students currently on golf scholarships
  • Four high-school state championship golf teams the last six years
  • Author of the book The Driven Golfer: Building your Method for Scratch Golf
  • USGTF Master Golf Teaching Professional and Certified Golf Club Manager
  • 2015 Open division champion, United States Golf Teachers Cup

His most successful student to date is Dylan Meyer, a player at the University of Illinois, who won the prestigious Western Amateur in 2016. Wolf has become friends with Illinois coach Mike Small, and said, “I have learned quite a bit about teaching course management and how to develop players to become successful collegiate golfers. I can put young students on the path of scholarship golf and future successes in life. As a teacher, we live through the successes of our students, learn from the ups and downs of our profession and never lose sight of the blessing we have been given: the ability to promote the game of golf and the USGTF.”
